Add more play to your life! Why it’s beneficial and 3 ways to do it 

Living in Bali, one of the most striking differences between Balinese and Western society I noticed is the fact that the Balinese are very happy and positive people. You rarely see a sad face here. During one of his visits to Bali in 1933, Charlie Chaplin already said: “From these people one gleans the true meaning of life – to work and play – play being as important as work to man’s existence. That’s why they’re happy.” 

To the Balinese, it’s not just about working, eating, sleeping and doing it all over again. Time to play and to socialise while doing something fun is an important part of their day. And I challenge you to do the same!

The benefits of play

I know, we are all busy and lead hectic lives but making time for more play might make all the difference in becoming happier, healthier and more content. Play reduces anxiety, lowers our stress levels, challenges our cognitive functions and simply makes us more positive human beings overall.

Here are 3 easy ways you can incorporate play into your life:

1. Organise a game night

How good are old-fashioned card games, paired with good company! Why not do it more often? A great way to catch up with friends, challenge your brain cells and get your play on.

2. Dance more

No need to hit the club, just put on your favourite tunes and have a little dance party at home – maybe while brushing your teeth in the morning? You’ll definitely start the day in a great mood.

3. Find YOUR favourite way to play

Maybe it’s an instrument you haven’t played in a while? Or a physical activity like tennis, volleyball or yoga? Think of all the things you loved doing as a kid: Maybe you were crazy about climbing trees? Do it! Jumping on the trampoline? Buy one for your living room and get moving (or even better: grab some friends and visit a trampoline park).

Getting more play into your day is a sure fire way to laugh more, take life less seriously, socialise, move and connect back with your inner child. And let’s be honest – we all need a bit of that.

    I thougt about it the other day and now I just do it…buy a new card game – one of my favorite author. Game of Quotes by Marc Uwe Kling…and then friends, we’ll have a fun night =)

    I love this! Adding more play to your life is so important. I love dancing around when I’m home alone and singing along to every song. Even if it’s just a five minute break from work I am ALWAYS in a better mood afterwards and I am smiling. It doesn’t have to be two hours or something crazy. Adding play and fun to your day is literally so easy. I am that girl that does a little spin and smile up at the sky on my way home from work (even when it’s pouring rain and everyone thinks I’m crazy), or does spontaneously decided to practice headstand on the beach and laughs when I fall down. If (Western) people could just stop taking life so serious ALL the time and just smile, laugh, play and have fun I honestly think the Western society would be so much happier and better!
